Former AIMers to Bophuthatswana, now a part of South Africa, Karl and Mary Smith received their missionary appointment to South Africa at the 1998 General Conference in Greensboro, North Carolina. They arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, in September 2000. They have been involved in evangelism, teaching, establishing churches, and volunteer charity work. They have also traveled to several southern Africa countries to evangelize. Mary Smith holds a bachelor’s of science in interdisciplinary studies and enjoys doing volunteer work, writing, and educating her children. In addition she has traveled in South Africa speaking to ladies groups and has worked with the Sunday school program of the UPC of South Africa to encourage children’s evangelism programs. In 2003, the Smiths’ appointment was expanded to include regional evangelism. He serves as the missionary superintendent with the primary duty of leading and directing the missionary field fellowship of South Africa.
